Researcher challenges Moroccan claims to Ceuta and Melilla

Spanish researcher Margarita Torres has challenged the historical narrative used by Morocco to claim sovereignty over the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Speaking on the Spanish radio station COPE, Torres asserted that the current form of the Moroccan state did not exist prior to 1957.

Torres argued that Ceuta and Melilla possess a historical depth spanning nearly three millennia, making them older than the kingdom of Marrakech. She stated that Spain should not yield to political or migratory pressure regarding these territories, maintaining that the enclaves have never been Moroccan.
