Researcher Joana Marques appointed EU representative to HFSP Council
Joana Marques, a senior researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), has been appointed by the European Commission as its representative on the Council of Scientists of the International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) for a two‑year term covering 2026‑2028, with the possibility of a further two‑year extension. In this role she will represent the non‑G7 European countries, help disseminate funding opportunities, and promote interdisciplinary research.
HFSP, which has funded 1,280 projects involving researchers from 73 nationalities and 31 Nobel laureates, relies on the Council to advise on funding programmes, project selection and award nominations. Marques, who has worked with the European Commission as an expert since 2014 and has a 26‑year research career, said the appointment recognises her professional trajectory and the growing international presence of FMUP investigators.
