Researcher links Don Quixote to 1589 Barcelona military secret
Researcher Javier Escudero has identified documentary evidence suggesting that Miguel de Cervantes incorporated a real military espionage secret from 1589 into 'Don Quixote de la Mancha'. The event occurred 25 years before the novel's publication in Barcelona.
The historical incident involved the bandit Tomás de Banyuls, who was negotiating the delivery of a county to King Philip II. Escudero's research indicates that Antonio Moreno, a key character in the second part of the novel, was a real person who served as a confidant to the Viceroy of Barcelona and acted as a liaison between the court and certain bandit groups during the religious wars with France.
In July 1589, Moreno received a letter delivered by a disguised bandit, a scene that Cervantes later mirrored in his writing. Because Moreno died in 1592, Escudero suggests Cervantes likely learned of these clandestine activities through a close source, specifically Pedro de Isunza, who assisted Moreno and later served as Cervantes' superior in Barcelona.
