Researchers advance biological studies through gait software and fruit fly neural mapping

Researchers have developed new tools and mappings to better understand biological movement and neurological structures. A collaborative team from the University of Cologne, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the University Hospital Cologne has created AutoGaitA, an open-source software designed to standardize gait analysis across different species.

By using this tool, scientists found a shared principle of movement between flies, mice, and humans: distal joints move faster than proximal joints. This standardization allows for direct comparison between vastly different organisms, such as a fruit fly's 141-millisecond step cycle and a human's one-second cycle.

In parallel neurological advancements, researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have completed the first full mapping of the male fruit fly nervous system. Following the 2024 mapping of females, scientists now possess complete connectomes for both sexes. This allows for the study of how specific neural connections drive differences in social behaviors, such as aggression and reproduction.
