Researchers advance neurodegenerative disease diagnostics and theories

Recent scientific developments are providing new insights into the diagnosis and potential causes of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Researchers at Universitätsmedizin Halle have developed a method to improve the reliability of Alzheimer’s blood tests. By focusing on the pTau217 biomarker, the team successfully distinguished Alzheimer’s-related changes from those caused by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), potentially reducing false positives in diagnostic testing. This study was published in Nature Communications.

In Germany, a research team led by the Technical University of Braunschweig is investigating the “Dual-Hit-Virus-Latency Hypothesis.” This theory suggests that latent herpesviruses and the role of neurons in chronic neuroinflammation may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Additionally, a study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia suggests that anatomical factors influence disease progression. Researchers found that the proximity of the entorhinal cortex to the tentorial notch affects how Tau protein deposits predict the transition to Alzheimer’s disease within a three-year period.
