Researchers awarded fellowships for radiation-free lung scans and cancer treatment

Two researchers from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health have been awarded $100,000 fellowships each to advance medical imaging and cancer treatment precision.

Dr. Jayasuriya, a paediatric respiratory physician, is working to implement advanced MRI techniques for lung scans. Unlike traditional CT scans, which carry radiation risks, these MRI methods provide detailed images of lung structure and airflow. This technology aims to help clinicians better manage conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, particularly for children.

Dr. Murray, a blood cancer researcher, is developing a platform to personalize treatment for patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). The goal is to move beyond decisions based solely on age and chemotherapy tolerance, instead using predictive data to match patients with the most effective treatments and reduce unnecessary toxicity.
