Researchers deploy 3D-printed reefs and quantum nanostructures for environmental and AI advancements

Researchers are exploring diverse technological solutions to address environmental and computational challenges. In the Atlantic Ocean, an international team is testing the use of 3D-printed artificial reefs to restore deep-sea cold-water coral habitats. Located at depths between 900 and 1,100 meters near the Porcupine Bank and the Guilvinec Canyon, twenty-three structures aim to provide stable surfaces for coral larvae and fragments to settle, potentially accelerating recovery processes that would otherwise take decades.

In the field of computing, engineers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have simulated a quantum nanostructure designed to improve the energy efficiency of optical neural networks. By utilizing a color center vacancy as a quantum emitter, the system aims to achieve the non-linear operations required for artificial intelligence at significantly lower power levels than current electronic GPUs or conventional optical systems, which typically require high-intensity lasers.
