Ohio State University researchers develop AI-powered scent transmission system
Researchers from Ohio State University and Zhejiang Laboratory in China have developed ‘Scentronic’, an AI-powered system designed to detect, transmit, and recreate odors remotely over the internet. The technology utilizes an electronic nose equipped with six gas sensors to identify chemical compounds associated with specific scents. Once identified, machine-learning models transmit the data to a receiving device, which uses scented liquids and miniature vibrating atomizers to release droplets into the air.
The current prototype is limited to five specific aromas: coffee, beer, red wine, cake, and orange. In laboratory tests involving 14 volunteers, participants were able to correctly identify the recreated scents with approximately 73% accuracy.
While the system does not transmit actual scent molecules across the internet, it instead sends digital instructions to a device containing preloaded ingredients. Potential applications include enhancing virtual reality, improving digital communication, and allowing consumers to smell products, such as perfumes or food, during online shopping. The researchers have also developed wearable versions of the scent generator, including designs shaped like wristbands and necklaces.
