Researchers develop AI-powered toothbrush prototype
Scientists have developed a new research prototype called DigiDent, designed to provide more precise dental hygiene data than current smart toothbrushes. While existing electric toothbrushes use sensors in the handle to track movement and pressure, the DigiDent system utilizes specially constructed bristles that act as individual sensors.
These bristles measure the exact contact between the brush and the teeth, capturing the strength, duration, and form of the brushing action. Artificial intelligence then analyzes these signals alongside movement data. In experimental settings, the system distinguished between various brushing motions with over 99 percent accuracy and identified 21 different areas of the mouth with 99.84 percent accuracy. The study regarding this technology was published in Nature Communications.
