Researchers develop DNA-based computing and new ALS protein treatment

Researchers have announced two distinct scientific breakthroughs in molecular biology and computing. In Ireland, scientists at the University of Nottoway have developed a ‘Scaffolded DNA Computer’. This molecular architecture uses long DNA strands as a primary structure and shorter strands as programmable components to perform mathematical calculations. Unlike traditional silicon-based computers that rely on transistors and continuous electricity, this system utilizes molecular reactions and thermodynamic equilibrium to process information, requiring only minimal heat to initiate processes.

Separately, scientists at the University of Wollongong in Australia have developed a molecule named MisfoldUbL to combat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Published in Nature Communications, the research demonstrates how MisfoldUbL acts as a ‘label’ for the cellular waste disposal system, targeting misfolded SOD1 proteins. In mouse models, the molecule successfully slowed symptom progression and protected motor neurons by facilitating the destruction of toxic protein accumulations before they could cause cellular death.
