Researchers develop dog-inspired urinal design to reduce splashing

A research team led by Professor Zhao Pan from the University of Waterloo and Randy Hurd from Weber State University has developed innovative ceramic urinal models designed to minimize splashing. The project, which included several students, was presented at the American Physical Society conference in Indianapolis.

The design utilizes fluid mechanics to address a long-standing issue in sanitary engineering. By shaping the urinal in forms resembling an apple slice and a tall, thin ‘J’, the researchers aim to ensure that fluid hits the surface at a shallow angle of incidence. Physics dictates that when a jet hits a surface at an angle of less than 30 degrees, splashing is significantly reduced or eliminated.

The concept was inspired by observing how dogs lift their legs to urinate against vertical surfaces to minimize impact angles. Beyond practical hygiene, the project incorporates differential equations and promotes sustainability through reduced water and cleaning product usage. While a commercial release date has not been set, a major department store has expressed interest in testing the prototypes.
