Cancer metabolism research advances with new compound and biomarkers

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed an experimental compound designed to overwhelm cancer cell metabolism. The treatment employs a dual-action strategy: it accelerates a cancer cell's consumption of sugar while simultaneously blocking its ability to use fat as a backup energy source. In laboratory tests involving mice with aggressive melanoma, the compound killed most cancer cells with minimal impact on noncancerous cells. The approach has also shown effectiveness against various human cancer types in vitro, including liver, breast, lung, and leukemia.

In related developments regarding liver cancer management, Des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (DCP), also known as PIVKA-II, is being recognized as a significant serum biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Unlike conventional markers that may rise during benign liver conditions, DCP is an abnormal prothrombin molecule produced when hepatocytes undergo malignant transformation. This biomarker provides critical insight into altered hepatic cellular function and helps support clinical decision-making in patients with chronic liver disease.
