Researchers develop mRNA acne vaccine to reduce skin inflammation
Researchers are developing experimental vaccines to combat acne by targeting the inflammatory processes that lead to skin lesions. One prominent candidate, an mRNA-based vaccine currently being studied by Sanofi, is undergoing Phase I/II clinical trials in adults.
The approach aims to prompt the body to produce antibodies against specific components of Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium involved in the condition. Rather than attempting to eliminate all bacteria in the skin's microbiota, the vaccine seeks to neutralize only the specific bacterial substances that trigger inflammation.
While the technology shows promise in intervening in the disease's mechanisms, researchers must still demonstrate that these vaccines provide sufficient clinical benefits to secure regulatory approval for widespread use outside of clinical research.
