Researchers develop new drug to treat aggressive leukemia
Researchers from the University of Gothenburg and Case Western Reserve University have developed a novel treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The approach utilizes a molecule named AcTor to target aggressive cancer cells.
The treatment works by simultaneously applying biological “accelerators” and “brakes.” While a standard anti-proliferative drug shuts down energy production in the mitochondria, the AcTor molecule inhibits a signaling protein to ensure the mTor protein continues to promote full cellular activity. This contradiction forces the cancer cells to continue working despite a lack of energy, leading to cell death caused by extreme stress.
Initial studies conducted on mice have shown promising results, including the disappearance of leukemic stem cells and the avoidance of drug resistance. According to Professor Leif Eriksson, this method is unique because it does not appear to affect healthy blood cells.
