Researchers develop new tools for neurodegenerative disease detection and toxicity testing

Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) are developing a platform to improve the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases. Led by Roberto Douglas Guimarães de Aquino under the supervision of Professor Alexandre Delbem, the project combines virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and brain activity analysis to identify mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Unlike traditional tests that can be influenced by sociocultural factors, this method uses immersive virtual environments where participants perform daily tasks. The system collects real-time biological data, including eye movements and electrical brain activity, to provide more precise diagnoses.

Separately, scientists at the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) have developed a microscopic 3D technology to cultivate cells. This device uses microfluidics to control the flow of nutrients and oxygen, creating cellular models that more closely mimic human tissue than conventional flat cultures. Designed to reduce animal testing, the platform allows for more accurate toxicity assessments of drugs, nanomaterials, and environmental pollutants. The device is made of a low-cost, biocompatible silicone and features a reversible design that allows researchers to recover intact cell models for further analysis.
