Smart glasses developed to stimulate brain for Alzheimer's management

A joint research team from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and KAIST has developed transparent OLED smart glasses designed to provide non-invasive brain stimulation for the prevention and management of Alzheimer's disease.

Unlike previous OLED-based devices that used opaque panels and required users to be in dark environments, these smart glasses feature a 75% light transmittance rate and over 90% brightness uniformity. This allows wearers to maintain their field of vision and engage in daily activities while receiving light stimulation.

Clinical trials involving 20 healthy adults demonstrated that the most significant changes in gamma wave activity—high-frequency brain waves linked to memory and attention—occurred when using the transparent OLED glasses in ambient light. The study, published in Science Advances, also noted that participants experienced minimal eye fatigue and glare. Future research will expand to include patients with mild cognitive impairment and early-stage Alzheimer's to verify safety and efficacy.
