Washington University researchers discover immune structures in skull bone marrow
Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have identified previously unknown immunological structures within the bone marrow of the skull. Published in the journal Nature, the study suggests that the skull functions as more than just a mechanical shield for the brain, acting instead as a specialized immune environment.
Using mouse models, scientists discovered these structures, which resemble germinal centers where immune cells like B cells are activated, respond to brain tumors before the lymph nodes in the neck. When these structures were disrupted in mice with glioblastoma, the aggressive brain cancer grew more rapidly, leading to earlier mortality.
While the primary findings were demonstrated in mice, researchers noted that preliminary evidence shows similar immune cells present in human skull bone marrow, suggesting that related organized structures may exist in humans. This discovery could potentially open new avenues for treating brain cancer by understanding how the skull's immune environment interacts with neural tissue.
