Researchers discover polyamines protect cells from iron overload
Researchers at the Whitehead Institute and MIT have discovered that cells use small molecules called polyamines to protect themselves from iron overload. Published in the journal Cell, the study reveals that polyamines act as storage lockers, holding iron in a non-reactive state to prevent it from triggering destructive reactions that damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.
This discovery explains why cells maintain high levels of polyamines and may lead to new medical advancements. Scientists believe this mechanism could be leveraged to develop cancer treatments by inducing iron overload to trigger cancer cell death, or provide insights into diseases like early-onset Parkinson’s, where polyamine levels in neurons are affected by mutations.
