Researchers examine parallels between AI development and human consciousness
Researchers and experts are examining the parallels between artificial intelligence development and human consciousness. Antal Jakovác, a researcher at the HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics, suggests that while AI is advancing rapidly—including its ability to perform high-level programming—it is premature to claim the emergence of self-aware superintelligence or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He notes that current systems lack the ability to represent themselves as part of the world in the way humans do.
Furthering this discussion, Gergő Orbán, head of a computational neuroscience research group at the same institute, highlighted findings from Anthropic regarding their Claude model. Researchers identified a functional duality in the AI, termed ‘J-space,’ which mirrors the human distinction between access consciousness (information processed for decision-making) and phenomenal consciousness (subjective experience). This structural similarity suggests that advanced reasoning models may possess internal information processing mechanisms comparable to certain aspects of human cognitive architecture.
