Researchers explore lithium-rich cathode and sodium battery advancements

Scientists are investigating new methods to enhance battery technology, focusing on both lithium-rich cathodes and sodium-based alternatives.

A research team led by Professor Kyojin Ku at Hanbat National University in Korea has discovered that intentionally introducing cation disorder into the atomic structure of lithium-rich cathodes can improve performance. While transition metal ions like nickel and manganese typically drift during operation and block lithium transport, this disordered structure enhances lithium movement and prevents performance degradation. This approach could lead to higher energy density batteries for electric vehicles and electronics.

Simultaneously, sodium is emerging as a potential alternative to lithium due to its abundance and lower cost. While lithium remains superior for high-energy-density applications because it is lighter and smaller, sodium batteries offer advantages such as faster charge and discharge capabilities, greater intrinsic safety, a wider operating temperature range, and reduced dependence on critical elements. However, sodium batteries are currently heavier than lithium batteries for the same amount of stored energy.
