Nikumaroro expedition investigates possible Amelia Earhart plane wreckage
A 17-member research team from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute has arrived at the remote island of Nikumaroro in the Republic of Kiribati to investigate the disappearance of aviator Amelia Earhart. The expedition aims to examine the ‘Taraia Object,’ a submerged anomaly in a lagoon identified via satellite imagery in 2020. Researchers believe this object may be the remains of Earhart’s Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, which vanished in 1937 alongside navigator Fred Noonan.
The team plans to use magnetometers, sonar, and a hydraulic dredge to clear sediment and inspect the object for metallic components like aluminum skin and rivets. This mission represents the 20th organized search for the aircraft, following theories that Earhart and Noonan landed on the atoll after running low on fuel.
The expedition faces significant environmental challenges, including an intense El Niño pattern and the presence of giant coconut crabs. These large, meat-eating crustaceans make staying on the island overnight impractical, forcing the crew to sleep on their research vessel, the Marin Mainiku.
