Researchers Identify Age 55‑60 as Peak for Cognitive and Emotional Skills
A new review by researchers at the University of Western Australia found that while fluid intelligence such as quick reaction time peaks in the twenties, the optimal blend of knowledge, experience and personality emerges between ages 55 and 60. The study, which examined multiple prior investigations, reports that crystallized intelligence, emotional stability, stress resilience and financial acumen continue improving into the late fifties, before declining after the mid‑sixties.
Around the same time, a Dutch blogger reflected on turning 40, noting that the midlife milestone can serve as a natural deadline for personal reassessment rather than a crisis. The author highlighted the contrast between early‑life expectations of decline and the emerging evidence that many cognitive strengths actually flourish in later decades.
