Researchers identify blood protein biomarkers to predict disability in aging populations
Researchers have identified specific blood protein biomarkers that may help predict future disability in older adults. The study, published in the journal GeroScience, addressed the public health challenge of maintaining independence in aging populations, particularly in Japan where a significant portion of adults aged 85 and older require long-term care.
A research team led by Keio University in Japan, in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging in the United States, analyzed plasma proteins in community-dwelling adults aged 85–89. Using machine learning and statistical analysis, the team found that higher levels of beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) and cystatin C were consistently associated with an increased risk of developing disability.
The findings, which were validated using data from the Invecchiare in Chianti (InCHIANTI) aging study in Italy, suggest that these biomarkers could enable earlier medical interventions to help older adults remain active and independent for longer periods.
