Researchers identify brain signal linked to multiple schizophrenia symptoms

A collaborative study involving McGill University, the McConnell Brain Imaging Center, the University of Montreal, and the Douglas Research Center has identified a common brain mechanism underlying several seemingly unrelated symptoms of schizophrenia.

By measuring beta band brain activity in 25 individuals with schizophrenia and 25 healthy controls during tasks involving the timing of images and sounds, researchers found that patients exhibited weaker and slower beta band activity. Notably, those with the most significant differences in this brain signal also experienced more disorganized speech and more severe clinical symptoms.

Dr. Lena Palaniyappan noted that these findings suggest measuring how the brain constructs and refines models of the world could reveal a common thread behind the complex symptoms of the disorder. If confirmed in larger studies, this could provide a method for identifying young individuals at risk of psychosis.
