Researchers identify limitations in standard cholesterol testing

New research suggests that standard cholesterol tests may fail to detect all significant risks for heart disease. A study involving over 35,000 participants from the UK Biobank indicates that inflammatory processes and changes in blood vessel walls play a critical role in cardiovascular health that simple cholesterol measurements may overlook.

Scientists analyzed three groups of lipoproteins: LDL (low-density lipoprotein), TRL (triglyceride-rich lipoproteins), and Lp(a) (lipoprotein(a)). While LDL is primarily associated with cholesterol transport and processing, researchers found that TRL and Lp(a) are significantly linked to inflammatory processes and immune system activity.

The findings, which were further validated using data from a US-based study, suggest that clinicians should consider additional blood markers, such as apolipoprotein B (apoB) and Lp(a), to provide a more comprehensive assessment of heart health.
