Researchers Identify New Brain Changes and Health Indicators of Healthy Aging

A recent health report outlines seven signs that indicate a person is aging well: clear thinking and ability to learn new things, maintaining independence in daily activities, having sufficient energy for preferred pursuits, effective emotional management, close relationships with family and friends, acceptance of one's age without seeing it as a burden, and prioritising quality of life over sheer longevity.

A separate scientific study mapping the human brain between ages 50 and 75 reveals an active, coordinated remodeling process. Researchers from Columbia University, the University of California, San Diego and the NIH‑funded 4D Nucleome program found that hippocampal microglia are largely replaced by blood‑derived immune‑like cells, increasing pro‑inflammatory activity and weakening the blood‑brain barrier. The study also documented a loss of three‑dimensional genomic organization in multiple brain cell types, suggesting mechanisms that may underlie age‑related neurodegenerative risk such as Alzheimer’s disease.
