Medical researchers advance skin cancer detection and immunotherapy prediction

Researchers are developing new methods to improve skin cancer detection and treatment outcomes. At City of Hope in the US, a scalable training program involving primary care physicians has been shown to improve skin cancer screening rates among stem cell transplant survivors, who face a significantly higher risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

In Germany, researchers at the University Hospital Erlangen have successfully used AI-supported image recognition combined with Line-Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT) to detect basal cell carcinomas without visible skin changes. This method provides high-resolution, three-dimensional images in real-time, allowing for earlier detection and less invasive treatment options.

Additionally, scientists at King’s College London have identified specific immune patterns in white blood cells, particularly B-cells, that may predict how melanoma patients respond to immunotherapy. While the study was limited to 24 patients, it offers a potential pathway toward more personalized cancer treatments and the avoidance of unnecessary side effects.
