Researchers identify new mechanisms and compounds for weight loss
New research is uncovering new mechanisms for weight management and potential ways to enhance the efficacy of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
Researchers at UC Berkeley have identified a compound known as TOFA that may assist in fat burning without the muscle loss often associated with current GLP-1 treatments. In mouse studies, TOFA increased energy expenditure by up to 18% by activating metabolic pathways, rather than simply suppressing appetite. The study suggests TOFA could serve as a complementary therapy, as combining it with semaglutide or tirzepatide produced greater weight-loss results in animal trials than either treatment alone.
Separately, a study from Yale University has provided new insights into how GLP-1 drugs affect the brain. Researchers found that AgRP neurons, which are traditionally associated with stimulating hunger, appear to play a role in maintaining fat loss during treatment. This discovery may shift the scientific understanding of how these medications work long-term and could lead to the development of more efficient obesity drugs.
