Researchers identify new metabolic approach to obesity treatment

Researchers at UC Berkeley have identified a potential new treatment for obesity and diabetes that functions differently than current GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro. While existing drugs primarily work by suppressing appetite and reducing caloric intake, the molecular substance 5-tetradecyloxy-2-furoic acid (TOFA) aims to increase energy expenditure by accelerating metabolism.

In studies published in Science Advances, researchers found that TOFA can block the production of lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, while activating genes that help cells burn fat and create energy. In mouse models, the substance improved insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, and showed potential in reducing fatty liver symptoms.

In the Czech Republic, obesity is viewed by experts as a chronic disease rather than a failure of willpower, with an estimated 20 to 25 percent of the population affected. While current weight-loss drugs are considered game-changers for reducing health risks, medical professionals emphasize they are meant to facilitate, not replace, lifestyle changes. The market for these medications in the Czech Republic is growing, with monthly expenditures reaching approximately 100 million CZK.
