Researchers in Ceará develop climate-resilient livestock models and tilapia skin grafts
Researchers at the State University of Ceará (Uece) have launched a collaborative project to develop sheep and goat production models more resilient to climate change. Part of the PROSUL Pepe Mujica program, the initiative establishes a scientific network between Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The research, coordinated by Professor Davide Rondina, focuses on epigenetics, metabolism, behavior, and reproduction to improve animal adaptation, increase productivity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Separately, researchers at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) have successfully utilized Nile tilapia skin grafts to treat severe corneal lesions in dogs and cats. The technique involves processing tilapia skin into an acellular dermal matrix rich in collagen, which serves as a scaffold for new cell growth. Since 2019, the procedure has been applied to over 400 animals, showing success in accelerating healing and preserving corneal transparency.
