Researchers in China achieve wireless data speeds of 206 Gbps

Researchers in Nanjing, China, have demonstrated a wireless data transmission capability of 206 gigabits per second using a thumbnail-sized chip. This speed is hundreds of times faster than typical mobile connections and aims to address the limitations of current 5G technology.

While 5G was marketed as a revolution for autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and industrial automation, many current implementations function similarly to 4G due to the physical limitations of high-frequency waves. High-frequency signals provide massive data capacity but struggle to penetrate solid objects or travel long distances. Consequently, most consumer 5G devices rely on lower frequencies that offer more range but significantly less speed than originally promised.

China has invested heavily in this infrastructure, with projections suggesting 4.5 million 5G towers will be in place by the end of 2025, connecting over 1 billion people. The new research seeks to bridge the gap between current mobile speeds and the high-bandwidth, low-latency requirements of next-generation applications.
