Researchers investigate parasite link to vascular occlusion

Researchers at Acıbadem University, led by Prof. Dr. Tanıl Kocagöz, are investigating a potential link between the parasite Toxoplasma gondii and the development of vascular occlusion. During examinations of atheroma plaques, the team detected Toxoplasma gondii DNA, suggesting the parasite may play a more significant role in arterial blockage than previously understood.

The current phase of the study aims to determine whether the detected DNA is merely a remnant of a past infection or if the parasite remains active and multiplying within the plaques, contributing to their growth and the progression of the disease. If the researchers can prove that the parasite is actively involved in the formation and advancement of these plaques, it could shift the treatment paradigm for cardiovascular diseases.

Currently, cardiovascular diseases are primarily managed by addressing cholesterol, arterial stiffness, and lifestyle factors. However, if an active infection is confirmed as a driver of plaque growth, future treatments might utilize antibiotics to target the infection rather than just the plaque itself, potentially reducing the risks of heart attack and stroke.
