Nikumaroro expedition investigates potential Amelia Earhart wreckage
A 17-person research expedition from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute has arrived at Nikumaroro, a remote atoll in Kiribati, to investigate the disappearance of aviator Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan.
The team is focusing on the ‘Taraia Object,’ an elongated structure identified in satellite and aerial imagery that may be the remains of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E. Researchers plan to use sonar, magnetometers, and dredging equipment to inspect the object located in the island's lagoon.
The mission faces several environmental challenges, including difficult weather and the presence of large coconut crabs. Due to the nocturnal activity and size of these crabs, the expedition team will sleep aboard the vessel Marin Mainiku rather than on the island.
