Researchers map functional circuits of the human immune system
An international research team, led by Gladstone Institutes, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and Stanford University in collaboration with Biohub, has mapped the functional circuits of the human immune system. The study, published in the journal Cell, represents a significant advancement in genomics by moving beyond simple gene catalogs to understanding how genes interact to control cellular behavior.
Using a technology known as Perturb-seq—which combines gene editing with single-cell RNA sequencing—researchers deactivated nearly 13,000 genes across 22 million human immune cells. This process allowed them to record the specific consequences of each gene's absence with unprecedented resolution, effectively creating a functional map of the immune system's regulatory networks.
