Researchers discover new mechanism for light capture in photosynthesis

An international research team has proposed a new model to explain primary charge separation in photosynthesis, the fundamental process that converts light energy into chemical energy. The study, published in Nature Communications, involved the National Research Council (CNR) Institute of Nanoscience in Modena, Princeton University, the University of L'Aquila, and the Max Planck Institute.

The research focuses on the Photosystem II molecular complex. Previously, scientists debated why electron transfer speeds varied between hundreds of femtoseconds and several picoseconds, with many believing multiple reaction paths existed. However, new data using molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemistry calculations suggests the reaction path is actually unique. The observed variations in speed are instead caused by changing conditions in the surrounding molecular environment.

This discovery could aid the development of biomimetic technologies for solar energy.
