Researchers uncover neural mechanisms behind memory tagging and retrieval

New research has provided insights into how the human brain selects and processes information for long-term storage. A study from the University of York, published in PLOS Biology, identified a neural mechanism that “tags” important experiences during learning to be strengthened during sleep. This process is linked to a specific brainwave pattern known as a “theta rhythm.” Memories associated with stronger theta rhythms during the initial learning phase were preferentially reinforced during sleep, leading to improved recall.

Complementary research from Rice University, published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, suggests that memory retrieval is a dynamic process rather than a static one. Using fMRI technology, researchers found that the way an individual accesses a memory—such as focusing on a specific detail versus a broad category—leaves a neural trace. This means that the brain activity related to a memory reflects not only the current retrieval attempt but also how that information was previously accessed, effectively updating the memory each time it is used.
