Researchers use AI and biotechnology to optimize landfill biogas

Researchers supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (Faperj) are developing technology that combines artificial intelligence and biotechnology to optimize biogas production in landfills. The project aims to maximize the utilization of urban waste to boost clean energy generation.

The study analyzes data to identify factors influencing methane production, the primary component of biogas, to improve the efficiency of capture wells. Researcher Álvaro Freitas noted that the AI will be used to evaluate landfill conditions, including bacterial families, organic matter, temperature, humidity, and pH levels, to determine the optimal dosage of biocompounds for insertion.
