Researchers use scanning tunneling microscopy to identify molecular quantum states

Researchers at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, in collaboration with colleagues from Spain, have developed a method to distinguish between different types of molecular excitations. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, the team studied cobaltocene molecules on a superconducting lead surface at extremely low temperatures.

By manipulating electron flow into and out of the molecules and applying a strong magnetic field, the scientists were able to decode complex spectra. This approach allows them to identify whether a specific signal corresponds to molecular vibrations, changes in electron spin, or orbital transitions, even when theoretical models are unreliable. The study, published in Physical Review Letters, was highlighted as an ‘Editors’ Suggestion’.
