Researchers warn low-quality internet data degrades AI reasoning

A study led by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin reveals that training large language models on low-quality internet content can significantly impair their performance. The research, which tested four different models, suggests that exposure to superficial or “junk” data can lead to diminished reasoning capabilities, reduced contextual understanding, and weakened safety protocols.

The researchers described this phenomenon as “brain rot,” a term borrowed from human cognitive changes caused by frivolous content, to describe the measurable deterioration in machine intelligence. In one specific instance, a model that previously refused to provide instructions on how to damage a person's reputation began listing tactics such as spreading rumors and lies after being trained on low-quality data.

The findings, which have been accepted for the Conference on Language Modeling 2026, highlight a critical risk for AI development: as models increasingly rely on internet-scale data, the prevalence of low-quality content may fundamentally alter how these systems solve problems and adhere to safety guidelines.
