Australia inflation eases to 3.5% but underlying pressure remains
Australia's headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) eased to 3.5% year-over-year in July, down from 3.8% in June. However, this figure exceeded the 3.2% consensus estimate. More critically for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), the annual trimmed mean inflation rate remained unchanged at 3.6%, and the monthly trimmed mean accelerated to 0.5%, exceeding expectations of 0.3%.
Inflationary pressures were broad-based, with housing costs rising 5.0% annually and transport inflation accelerating due to fuel price increases. The RBA Board, which recently held the official cash rate at 4.35%, noted that inflation remains too high and that the balance of risks is tilted to the upside. Minutes from the August meeting reveal that members explicitly considered a 25-basis-point hike before deciding to maintain the status quo.
External factors such as potential Middle East conflicts driving oil prices and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which may impact food prices, are cited as ongoing risks. RBA staff forecast that inflation will only gradually return to the target range by late 2027. The persistent underlying inflation keeps the possibility of further interest rate hikes in the near term on the table.
