Federal Reserve and RBA face pivotal interest rate decisions
Central banks in the United States and Australia are facing critical decision points regarding interest rates. In the U.S., Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has implemented a significant policy shift by eliminating “forward guidance,” a practice that previously signaled future rate directions to markets. While prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi suggest a high probability of the Fed holding rates steady in September, the CME Fedwatch tool indicates a more divided outlook, maintaining a significant probability for a quarter-point hike.
In Australia, economists and major banks, including Westpac and CBA, anticipate that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will maintain the cash rate at 4.35% following a surprise fall in June inflation data. Despite the cooling inflation, RBA Governor Michele Bullock is expected to maintain a hawkish tone, keeping the possibility of future hikes open due to persistent above-target inflation and geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East that could impact energy costs. Analysts suggest the RBA may adopt a wait-and-see approach as it monitors domestic demand and labor market trends.
