RBA Deputy Governor warns of worsening inflation outlook

Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser has warned that the nation's inflation outlook is materially worse than previous projections. Speaking at an investment conference, Hauser noted that while monetary policy is beginning to slow the economy, persistent price pressures remain a significant challenge.

Key drivers of the deteriorating outlook include surging global oil prices—driven by conflict in the Middle East—and rising costs associated with artificial intelligence and technology investments. Hauser also highlighted capacity constraints and the risk of inflation expectations becoming embedded, noting that some businesses now view an inflation rate of 3% to 3.5% as a potential new norm.

These comments have shifted financial markets, with the probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in November rising to approximately 50%. The RBA faces a difficult balancing act between curbing inflation and protecting a softening labor market, as the unemployment rate rose to 4.7% in September.
