Reserve Bank of India rate hike impacts household debt and liquidity
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, a move that has raised concerns regarding the financial stability of Indian households. The decision, supported by all six members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), shifts the central bank's stance to calibrated tightening. This increase may pressure families already managing accumulated debt and rising costs for essential goods, potentially forcing a reduction in discretionary spending.
Simultaneously, the RBI's decision to inject Rs 2.5 lakh crore into the banking system has drawn scrutiny. The State Bank of India (SBI) noted in a recent report that this large liquidity infusion appears difficult to reconcile with the central bank's efforts to maintain a tight monetary policy aimed at controlling inflation. SBI suggested that such actions could create market confusion regarding the RBI's immediate priorities, even as the bank moves its operating rate toward the upper end of its policy corridor.
