Resident Evil: Apocalypse leaked details reveal scrapped open-world project
Leaked details from industry insider Dusk Golem have revealed information regarding a scrapped version of Resident Evil 9, originally titled ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’. The project was reportedly an open-world, single-player experience set on a fictional island in Singapore, utilizing technology from Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds.
The cancelled title was intended to feature a large ensemble cast, including Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, and Sheva Alomar, alongside two new characters. The narrative would have focused on an outbreak on the island, with the BSAA organization serving as the primary antagonist following the arrest of Chris Redfield. The gameplay was expected to prioritize action over horror, featuring vehicle traversal and an infection meter inspired by Resident Evil Outbreak.
Capcom reportedly decided to restart development to streamline the project, reducing the number of protagonists. This shift led to the development of Resident Evil Requiem, where Leon became the primary protagonist and Jill Valentine was eventually cut from the story. The concept of a character experiencing terror for the first time was later evolved into the character Grace.
