Resident Evil film projected to set franchise box office record

The upcoming Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger, is projected to achieve a historic opening for the franchise. According to Box Office Pro, the film is expected to earn between $40 million and $50 million during its first weekend. If these forecasts hold, it will surpass the previous record held by Resident Evil 4: Retribution, which earned $26.65 million in 2010.

Produced by Vertigo Entertainment and Sony Pictures, the adaptation takes a different approach than previous iterations. Rather than following the established storylines of characters like Leon S. Kennedy or Chris Redfield, Cregger is crafting an original synopsis set in Raccoon City centered on an ordinary person. The screenplay was co-written by Shay Hatten, known for his work on the John Wick series. While the film departs from a strict adherence to the video game plots, it is expected to include various references to the source material.
