Resident Evil film success drives 50% surge in Capcom game sales
The new Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger, has achieved significant commercial success, grossing over $245 million worldwide within two weeks of its release. The film debuted at number one in the US box office and has become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise's cinematic history.
This cinematic success has directly impacted Capcom's video game business. Following the film's release, engagement with the Resident Evil game franchise saw an average increase of 50%. Daily active users across key titles, including Resident Evil 2, 4, 7, and Village, rose from approximately 500,000 to 750,000. Daily sales for the franchise also saw a substantial boost, increasing from 34,000 to nearly 80,000 units during the same period. The Resident Evil 2 remake was a primary driver of this growth, seeing active users multiply up to five times due to its thematic connection to the film's Raccoon City setting.
