Residente begins filming ‘Porto Rico’ starring Bad Bunny

René Pérez Joglar, known professionally as Residente, has begun filming his directorial debut, a film titled ‘Porto Rico’. The project is described as a Caribbean Western and historical drama that explores the colonial history and roots of Puerto Rico.

Bad Bunny stars in the lead role, marking his first major starring performance. The high-profile cast also includes Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem. The film’s screenplay was co-written by Residente and Alexander Dinelaris, the Oscar-winning writer of ‘Birdman’. Cinematography is being handled by Anthony Dod Mantle, an Oscar winner for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Although the story focuses on Puerto Rican history, filming is taking place in the Dominican Republic. This decision was driven by infrastructure requirements and limitations regarding tax incentives in Puerto Rico. The production is led by 1868 Studios, with Alejandro G. Iñárritu serving as executive producer.
