Residente begins filming ‘Porto Rico’ starring Bad Bunny

René Pérez, known as Residente, has announced the start of filming for his directorial debut, a historical drama titled ‘Porto Rico’. The project, which he describes as the most complex and challenging of his career, is being filmed in the Dominican Republic.

The film features a high-profile cast including Bad Bunny in his first leading role, Edward Norton, Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem, and Rubén Blades. Co-written with Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris, the story is inspired by true events and explores Puerto Rican history through a lens of colonialism.

Residente noted that while the production was intended to be filmed in Puerto Rico, the local government made it impossible to do so. He expressed gratitude to the Dominican Republic for providing the space to film a Caribbean production in Spanish, noting that studios had previously suggested such films lacked interest.
