Residential fire in Oshu City, Iwate, leaves one dead

A fatal house fire occurred in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, on the afternoon of October 22, 2026. A two-story wooden residence belonging to a 64-year-old contract employee was completely destroyed by the blaze, which also spread to the roof of an adjacent house.

Emergency responders extinguished the fire approximately three hours after it was reported. Following the blaze, authorities discovered one body of undetermined gender in the ruins. Police are currently working to identify the deceased, noting that a 60-year-old wife residing at the address has been unreachable since the incident. Two other residents were out at the time of the fire and are safe. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
