Residential fires in Upper Austria and Tyrol cause damage

Two separate residential fires occurred in Austria, causing significant property damage and injuries.

In Gschwandt, Upper Austria, a fire broke out in the upper floor of a single-family home around 2:00 AM. A 71-year-old man attempted to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher but sustained burns of an unspecified degree, requiring treatment at the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck. The fire heavily damaged the upper floor, attic, roof structure, and parts of the ground floor. Investigators suggest a sauna heater may have been the cause, pending further technical laboratory analysis.

In Hopfgarten im Brixental, Tyrol, a fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment around 4:00 AM. An appliance in the attic storage area, identified by the incident commander as a clothes dryer with a technical defect, caught fire. The resident fled to a neighbor's home to call for help. While firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the roof or other apartments, the unit was left heavily smoke-damaged and uninhabitable. The resident is currently staying with family.
